Purpose:
The main objective of the study is to identify the species of birds found in the park W in order to develop strategies for good conservation and tourism development of this part of the biodiversity of the Park. The data were collected from 2010 to 2017
Project description
Title: Census of the avian richness of the W Benin Park
Personnel: AHOMAGNON abithe Arabelle Metode, AFFOUKOU Codjo Christian
Study area description:
The peripheral region of Park W directly includes the communes of Kérou, Banikoara, Kandi, Karimama and Malanville. It extends further south with the communes of Toucountouna and Kouandé. The W Park Complex is composed of the terminal extension of the Atacora chain that runs from the Akwapim range in Ghana through Togo to Benin. On each side of this chain, there are flat regions: the Borgou plain in the east and the Gourma plain in the west. It is a vast peneplain of gneiss and granite, crossed by a few hills of rather modest altitudes (20 to 40 meters) descending gently towards the northeast. On the western side of the chain, there are also some low hills that break the homogeneity of the Gourma plain. The NNE-SSE oriented chain is crossed twice by the Mekrou River which forms the Koudou Falls at its first crossing. The second crossing is characterized by a series of rapid and narrow passages of which the Mekrou gorge is the most spectacular. The climate is tropical continental (Sudanian). The annual rainfall varies between 900 and 1000 mm. The hottest month (April) reaches temperatures around 40°C and the coldest month (December) is 24.8°C. (CENAGREF Report, 2009)

Sampling description:
Periodic and regular observations were made on bird species from 2010 to 2017 accompanied by a guide. A guide because he knows all the trails and camp points, and is trained to accompany tourists on foot. The itinerary was chosen according to the tracks. The GPS was used for the localization and especially to geo-reference the places of observation of each species, the binoculars to visualize the species from far. So the methodology used was to walk along the trails and camp points and stop at the sight of a bird, observe it with the help of the equipment to keep it identified if possible, take pictures and then take the geographical coordinates of these observation places. These observations have been made periodically and regularly from 2010 to 2017.
Quality control:
All the observation points have been checked and cleaned up for more accuracy on the location. Coordinates outside the observation area were removed. The standard used is the Darwin Core standard (Darwin Core Task Group, 2009). The dataset has been put online on the GBIF website in May 2022, under the CC-by-NC license and therefore it is accessible to everyone
