Background: Family medicine is a branch of medicine representing the primary healthcare facility and unfortunately still faces serious problems and shortage in Egypt and worldwide. Because of troubles facing medical students while choosing that speciality as a future career, most of them decide to neglect it.
The aim: was to raise the awareness of medical students and encourage them to pursue this specialty as a future career, with the goal of improving people health and reducing the tremendous strain on specialized hospitals.
Subjects and methods: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out targeting the undergraduate medical students at Tanta University using convenience sampling technique. Naturally, consent was taken first from them. The sample size was 346, and a Google form questionnaire was used to collect data from them. Analysis of that data was performed using SPSS software.
Results: The overall respondents were 346, Male participants were overwhelming and the most (99.4%) were single. A great percent had no physician member in family. Most of the respondents agreed that Egypt severely lacks family physicians and the most agreed that they receive insufficient financial return. Many agreed that family physicians don’t receive the necessary support from the health care system.
Conclusion: The students showed positive attitude toward family medicine. They acknowledgedthe integral role played by family physicians to improve the health sector. The majority of them are not planning to choose family medicine as a future career as it seems to be that their plans were influenced by many factors they settled.
Recommendations: were developed based on the students’ choices as the following: Dissemination of information about family medicine specialty. Requesting older family physicians to hold educational courses for trainee students
