This paper exhibits a robust current controller incorporating the variable bandwidth technique with the disturbance observer (DOB) for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). There are two contributions: (a) the variable bandwidth algorithm, called the auto-tuner, is systematically designed to boost the transient current tracking performance and (b) it is proved that the proposed controller renders the closed-loop system to recover the target tracking performance without steady-state errors. The experimental study is conducted to verify the efficacy of proposed controller using a 700-W prototype PMSM.
